Symposium: What is Urban Fabric?

Anne Marr

Urban Fabric, is a new research community led by a high calibre of researchers and academics based at Central Saint Martins as part of the UAL Textiles Futures Research Centre. UFab offers sustainable and innovative textile solutions to transform urban environments and their impact on daily life.

The Urban Fabric Symposium will explore understandings and boundaries of different textile-based approaches to respond to societal or urban needs and to create more empathetic communities. This half day event will engage practitioners and academics from Central Saint Martins, as well as representatives from local authorities and the private sector to share thought provoking, innovative case studies of meaningful community engagement – transforming environments and changing the notion of textile design.

The Urban Fabric Symposium will offer an open forum for stakeholders to share best practice and enhance knowledge, as well as draw a common understanding of the scope and limitations of current practice. It will also provide the foundation for mapping future urban fabric approaches, to create a more empathetic sense of place.
